KIDS ENJOY “EXPLORAVACATION” IN THE ARKANSAS OZARKS

This summer, more and more families are traveling to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and discovering an “exploravacation.”  This historic village hidden away in the Ozark Mountains in the northwest corner of the state is proving to be the ideal spot where kids can safely discover -oftentimes on their own- a downtown filled with historic adventure and natural wonders and an uptown featuring “America’s Most Haunted Hotel”The 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa.

“It wasn’t until we started talking to the kids themselves,” explained Jack Moyer, hotel general manager, “that we discovered that parents feel comfortable allowing their kids to go off alone in exploring our historic downtown district assuming they do things like traveling in pairs, have their cell phones on, et cetera.  The kids, during informal focus groups, described being wowed at the crazy stone staircases, unique history, interesting designed buildings, and the feel that you were on this fun scavenger hunt with a new discovery at every turn.

“I enjoyed the kids’ analogy that being downtown was like hanging at the mall just a lot more interesting.”

Eureka Springs, it is said, is nothing if not interesting.  Formally a Wild West Town, thrilling tales can be learned by participating in such activities as the Eureka Springs Downtown Network’s Underground Tour, the Haunted Eureka Ghost Tours of the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, or simply by wandering along unguided and stepping off a main street’s sidewalk and standing in awe as it suddenly turns into a historic hike down a rustic trail past footings of buildings dating back to late 1800s.

Such strolls can also afford such wonders as…
a specific storefront where a closer investigation can reveal bullet holes remaining from the shootout following one of America’s first attempted bank robberies using the “motor car” as a getaway vehicle,
a Civil War Cave that was used as a hospital for injured soldiers for both the North and the South and later was converted into a very popular saloon,
urban, spring-fed creeks that run quietly and secretly under stores, the courthouse and the auditorium,
numerous historic springs that “healed” thousands who flocked to their pools in the late 1800s,
dozens of brass historic plaques with stories and photos, and
         unknown surprises at every turn.

“Still, ‘The Great Exploration’ is at the Crescent Hotel,” Moyer noted.  “Our kids insisted on including the Crescent Hotel Ghost Tour.  With wide-eyed, breathe-held enthusiasm, they walked the same hallways where apparitions have been seen and their images often captured by digital shutterbugs.  The thrill comes with an assurance that no one is in danger yet the excitement is real, especially when the lights go out in ‘the morgue’.  After each experience, exploration continues undauntedly.”

Two focus group participants, Keely Baldridge and Nina Greene stated, “Kids would always prefer to stay at someplace cool like the Crescent or Basin Park hotels as opposed to just a motel because at a historic hotel everywhere you turn there is something interesting.”

Being specific Nina stated, “After the ghost tour at the Crescent, my mom let my sister and I explore the hotel even further because she knew I was going to be okay.  She would not have allowed that at a motel.  The whole hotel thing was totally awesome.”

Moyer expounded on his research stating that there are very few vacation destinations where parents will allow their children to “explore” like they will allow them to do so here in Eureka Springs.

“Maybe that’s why we have become such a popular destination,” Moyer concluded.  “You do the math: you add our downtown and our history to our adjacent lakes, rivers and pristine forestlands and it totals up to an enjoyable -and affordable- vacation.  It’s what we like to call an ‘exploravacation’ where lifetime memories are created.”

Eureka Springs, one of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations as selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, sits adjacent to both Beaver Lake and Table Rock Lake, and within minutes of the well-known fishing and floating streams of the White River, Kings River and Buffalo National River, the latter being part of the National Park system.  The Ozark Mountains and The Ozark National Forest provide the surrounding natural greenspace.

The two historic hotels, the 1905 Basin Park and the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa, offer family packages that are perfect for those looking to enjoy an “exploravacation”. Those packages include weekday discounts, fun attractions and, of course, ghost tour tickets.

The Lion King Does Free Family Performance in Los Angeles

We've just learned that cast members from Disney's "The Lion King" (at Mandalay Bay) will be performing in Los Angeles at The Grove outdoor shopping and entertainment district during a free event on Friday, July 9 at 5pm and 7pm.

Grab the kids and join the cast as they celebrate "The Lion King Day" at The Grove, performing iconic songs from the Broadway phenomenon such as "Circle of Life," "Shadowland," "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Endless Night" alongside the FAME Church Choir, Los Angeles.

Performers will include Kissy Simmons, who joined the Las Vegas company after appearing as "Nala" on Broadway; Buyi Zama, a native of South Africa, who has performed as "Rafiki" in seven productions of The Lion King around the world; and Jelani Remy as "Simba," previously seen in the theatrical touring production of High School Musical.

As part of the celebration, guests can also join in the festivities by creating their own Lion King-themed mask made from recycled products in a workshop hosted by Ann Closs-Farley Designs from 3-7pm.

According to all accounts, the Las Vegas production of The Lion King at the Mandalay Bay Hotel is virtually identical to the other companies seen around the globe so this should be a great event. For additional information about it on your next Vegas jaunt, visit their site LionKingLasVegas.com

And if  you don't know about Los Angelenos' favorite staycation, The Grove is one of the city's most popular shopping, dining and entertainment destinations, and it's right near the Farmers Market in Fairfax. There's a lot to see there for little toddlers, older kids, and fashionista tweens. The great play areas will occupy you all day, and when you need a break, there is a variety of good indoor and outdoor restaurants.

The Peabody Orlando Launches National Search For New Duck Master

The Peabody Orlando, famous for its five marching mallard ducks, has embarked on a national search for a new Duck Master. This unique job opportunity is just one of three such positions in the world. The Peabody Orlando plans to have the new Duck Master on board and trained in time to host the grand opening duck march for its $450-million expansion, which will open in late September 2010.

The tradition of the famous Peabody Marching Ducks began in 1932, when Frank Schutt, general manager of The Peabody Memphis, and a friend, Chip Barwick, returned empty-handed from a weekend hunting trip. As a prank the two put their live duck decoys (which were legal at the time) in the fountain in the hotel's Grand Lobby. The reaction from hotel guests was nothing short of enthusiastic. Since then, every day at 11 a.m., the ducks are led by the Duck Master down the elevator from their "Duck Palace" on the roof to the marble fountain in The Peabody Grand Lobby. The ceremony is reversed at 5 p.m., when the ducks march back down the red carpet through crowds of admiring spectators to retire for the evening.

"We're looking for a captivating and talented individual with a love for animals and passion for working with people," stated Alan Villaverde, managing director of The Peabody Orlando. "This tradition is very important to The Peabody Hotel and its history. Our Duck Masters are known and loved around the world, and we look forward to opening the new expansion at The Peabody Orlando with a new Duck Master to commemorate this monumental time in the hotel's history."

The Duck Master at The Peabody Orlando will be responsible for maintaining the health, diet, rotation and living quarters for the five mallard ducks and conducting the twice daily March of The Peabody Ducks before hotel guests and off-property audiences. The Duck Master will also coordinate off-site presentations and conduct media interviews about wildlife, ducks and the environment. Additional responsibilities include working within the Guest Services and Front Office areas in accordance with business needs. For the complete job description, visit http://bit.ly/DuckMaster.

Classic Journeys Announces New Greek Isles Walking Tour

At Classic Journeys, we spent last week in-country with our terrific native guides on Crete and Santorini. The trip's mission quickly changed from simply renewing acquaintances to making some exceptional – and wholesale – improvements to our Greek Isles cultural walking adventure:

* 4 hours of driving eliminated (hence 4 hours added for discovery)
* 3 new countryside walks
* 2 new cultural visits with local artisans
* 1 great new boutique hotel

Day 4 of our itinerary is the perfect example, featuring the excavations at Eleftherna (one of Crete's must-see archaeological sites). To our minds, there was too much time in the vehicle and not enough time in the open air. So, we reconnoitered, reconfigured and rerouted...and came up with a brand-new walk that showcases the island's true colors, from the deep green vineyards and silvery olive groves to the shimmering cobalt sea. After a visit to the magnificent ruins of the Minoan palace at Knossos – and a thrilling glimpse of their art, architecture and engineering prowess – guests proceed gratefully to our hand-picked boutique hotel in Heraklion.

It turns out that resetting our sights on walking was a breeze in a place where the sea is a constant presence. Yet – as on every Classic Journey – the real highlights are the cultural connections we make along the way:

* A private introduction to ancient lace-making techniques by our friend Popee, curator of a local folk art museum
* A private instruction from our baker friend George, one of a vanishing breed who still make phylo dough by hand
* A private demonstration of the centuries-old craft of pottery-making by our friend Dimitri
* A private stopover hosted by our friend Joanna at her family-run olive press
* A private winetasting at the family-owned vineyard of our friend Nikos, not far from Oia

Note how the words "private" and "friend" keep cropping up? In a nutshell, they sum up how Classic Journeys connects to each region we visit. While most tourists arrive by sea at Santorini, spend a few hours amid the hustle and bustle of Fira, and quickly return to their ships, to us, that's barely scratching the surface. We're there to get to know Santorini like the locals do, setting out on a meandering footpath that takes us from Fira to Oia on the back side of the island, where whitewashed villages dot the hillsides and terraced fields slope down to the sea.

The price for our seven-day, six-night Greek Isles adventure, departing in September, October, May and June, is $3895 per person, double occupancy, including all breakfasts and five dinners.

For a detailed itinerary and daily agendas, click on www.classicjourneys.com/greece, or contact a Guest Services Coordinators directly at (800) 200-3887.

Protecting Families From Foodborne Illness

As we coast up and down the aisles of our local supermarket, searching for the freshest looking produce, we often forget about the legal agreement between consumer and producer that ensures us the right to produce that won’t jeopardize our well-being.

But with the recent of spike deaths and illness related to salmonella and E. coli, many wonder what our elected officials doing to guarantee safe food for America’s families.

In a 500 page report released on Tuesday, the Institute of Medicine – an independent organization chartered by Congress to advise the government on scientific matters – concluded that the Food and Drug Administration is too reactive and lacks serious authority.

Rather than negotiating recalls long after contaminated products have been shipped, stocked and purchased, researchers are recommending that the FDA become more proactive by identifying foodborne diseases before they ever leave the manufacturer. This can be achieved, the committee says, by investing more energy in food inspections and strengthening communication between the FDA and state food safety agencies.

On the heels of this new report, a coalition of food safety advocates are launching a media blitz this week aimed at convincing senators to pass food safety legislation S. 510. The bill, which was approved by the House last July, already comprises many of the recommendations made by the Institute of Medicine.

Even though peanuts, alfalfa sprouts, romaine lettuce, black pepper, and cookie dough were all recalled in 2010, the Senate still has a full plate. Will food safety legislation S. 510 will hit the Senate floor any time soon? Don’t hold your breath.

Until our elected officials wake up to the seriousness of foodborne illnesses, we suggest you follow these six easy steps.
  •  Only buy freshcut, refrigerated produce that shows no signs of bruising or damage.
  • When transporting your groceries, keep your produce separate from your meat, poultry and seafood at all times.
  • Before consuming any fruits or vegetables, be sure to wash them thoroughly in warm water.
  •  Only buy pasteurized juices.
  • Refrigerate your produce at a constant 40° F
  • Wash your cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and counter tops with hot water and soap between the       preparation of raw meat, poultry, or seafood and the preparation of food that will not be cooked.

Homewood Suites by Hilton Offers “Suite Summer Deals”

Homewood Suites by Hilton, an international brand of all-suite, residential-style hotels, today announced four ways to save even more money this summer on stays at its nearly 300 hotels. Guests can save 10-20% off stays by selecting the promotion which best fits their travel needs. All stays include the brand’s value-packed features and amenities including a daily hot full breakfast, evening meal with beverages every Monday-Thursday, complimentary internet and recreational activities.

“To that extent, we have put together a variety of suite deals for summer. Travelers are embracing the bundled value of getting roomy suites, delicious meals and great outdoor recreation areas all for about the same price as a standard hotel room.”
“We realize that travelers are being selective and are looking for hotels where they can get the best overall value for their summer vacations and weekend getaways,” said Carla Raynor, vice president of marketing. “To that extent, we have put together a variety of suite deals for summer. Homewood Suites offers travelers the space they need to spread out, including fully-equipped kitchens, separate living and sleeping areas, recreational options like sports courts, outdoor grills and pools. While other hotel brands have cut back on guest amenities, Homewood Suites has enhanced its offering. In 2009, the brand completed its Distinctly Homewood initiative, a five-year multi-phased product-improvement program designed to bring a greater sense of consistency across the system. This included the installation of granite countertops in kitchens and bathrooms, laminate wood flooring in suite foyers and kitchens, an upgraded bedding and linen package and enhanced in-room entertainment options.
Another Homewood Suites enhancement included the revamping of its complimentary daily hot breakfast and evening meal with drinks programs. The brand spent two years crafting and testing new menu items which were developed into 30-day rotational menus for hotels. Some of the items include savory breakfast entrees such as the farmhouse frittata, lemony oregano hash browns, Canadian bacon and turkey sausages. Filling dinner items include slow-cooked BBQ beef brisket, rotisserie chicken, farm-raised tilapia and an assortment of entrée salads. Additionally, most Homewood Suites properties serve beer and wine with the evening meal*. These complimentary meal programs provide substantial value to both business and leisure travelers looking to save money while on the road.
