ALASKA TOURING

Meet sled dog puppies on your Holland America land excursions in Alaska. Photo c. HAL

This year for the second year in a row, there will be no big ships in Alaska as Transport Canada has banned almost all cruise activities in Canadian waters until next February. Families who don’t want to wait until 2022 have the opportunity to see Alaska a different way—and spend more time on land in and around Denali National Park as well as elsewhere. The largest players in the region -- Holland America Line and Princess Cruises -- have committed to operating their Alaska-based lodges this year. Adventure Smith Explorations also offers small-ship and other Alaska adventures, including yachts potentially available just for your group. The  summer of 2019, TakingtheKids.com spent a few magical days kayaking, canoeing and just taking in the views and wildlife  at  the small  (just 18 cabins and 40 guests) at  Kenai Fjords  Glacier Lodge within the national park and accessible only by boat from Seward. And really good news: Denali National Park will allow road trippers to venture farther on their own. Check out one of the state’s newest campground sites, K’esugi Ken RV & Tent Campground, where you can pitch your tent in the shadow of North America’s largest peak. To find more campgrounds and plan your trip, visit TravelAlaska.com.

BLACK HISTORY & CULTURE FOR ALL

Take the kids to the museums and historic sites around the country that are putting the civil rights struggle in context for 21st century youth. The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC may still be closed but you certainly can visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Open destinations worth the journey include the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the first built by a major U.S. city to interpret the life and work of African Americans, Plan a weekend around the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute or the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

CAMPING AT JELLYSTONE PARKS

Yogi Bear and his pals will soon be your pals when you stay and play at one of the Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts in the US. Photo c. Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts

So, what if you haven’t been camping since Scouts? Record numbers of families are camping, often for the first time, and Yogi-Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts make it easy. With more than 75 Jellystone Park locations across the US and Canada, you’ll find a campground nearby packed with amazing attractions such as pools, water slides and splash grounds like the Jellystone Park Camp-Resort that Family Travel Forum visited. Hike, fish, explore and take advantage of family activities such as jumping pillows, mini golf and foam parties. Beloved characters Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, Cindy Bear and Ranger Smith from Jellystone make an appearance, too. Accommodations ranging from premium cabins and treehouses to deluxe RV sites and traditional tent campsites suit every family. Book now at www.jellystonepark.com, as prime summer dates are already selling out. Plan ahead for popular theme weekends such as Christmas in July, Chocolate Lovers Weekend and Halloween Spooktacular Weekends. Remember you can borrow or rent, rather than buy, any gear you might need.

CITY LIGHTS IN THE BRIGHTEST CITY

New York is waking up and welcoming visitors once again, encouraging you to help rebuild the city’s $60 billion tourism industry. One of the summer’s cultural highlights is the outdoors show at the New York Botanical Garden, KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature, showing through Oct. 31, 2021. Immerse yourselves in sculpture and art installations from the famous Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, who lived in New York from 1958-1973. Kusama’s lifelong obsession with nature, thanks to a childhood spent in the greenhouses and fields of her family’s seed nursery, will find full expression at the NYBG. New monumental sculptures highlight the show; Dancing Pumpkin and I Want to Fly to the Universe make their worldwide debut. Watch for the first-ever obliteration greenhouse, Flower Obsession. Infinity Mirrored Room - Illusion Inside the Heart, a signature Kusama experience in which visitors interact with mirrored walls and the sense of infinite depth, is set to open August 3. NYBG is in the Bronx and is easily accessible by subway or the Metro-North Railway. NYBG is open daily; purchase timed entry tickets online at NYBG as early as possible. At 250 acres, NYBG is quite large so we recommend going early in the day to allow time to see it all and dine at one of the garden’s restaurants.

CRUISING EVERYWHERE

Princess Cruise Line guests use a wearable Medallion Pass as their ID when embarking on their ship at port. Photo c. Princess Cruise Line

While cruise lines are working to figure out how and when they can start cruising from US ports this summer, they also are getting creative with alternatives. Luxury Seabourn Cruise Line, known for unique all-inclusive cruises on smaller ships, will be cruising in Greece and from Caribbean ports this summer. Holland America is finding great interest in their Alaska land tours this summer while offering value-added amenities on 2022 cruises, including half-off drinks, WiFi, excursions and dining. Additionally, they are scheduling weeklong Greece and Mediterranean cruises between August and November aboard the Eurodam. And Princess Cruises, for those planning ahead, is touting deals that include drinks, gratuities and with your Medallion wearable, flexible new Dine My Way schedules. MedallionNet is super charged WiFi internet connectivity that leverages a new constellation of satellites, if you can’t leave work behind. Plan ahead as most cruise lines will require passengers to be fully vaccinated before boarding.

DISNEY NEWS

Disneyland and California Adventure Park have reopened to Californian residents and hope to open to all later this summer. As at Walt Disney World, there is limited capacity, fewer shows and no character meet and greets, though additional parades and pop ups have been added. At the Orlando theme parks, guests like the virtual lines for rides and ordering food via a Disney Experience App so that it is ready when you arrive. There are also new attractions -- like Micky and Minnie’s Runaway Railway in Disney’s Hollywood Studies, the first time the world’s two most famous mice have been featured in an attraction. The Taste of EPCOT International Flower & Garden Show runs until July 5, followed by the Food and Wine Festival July 15-Nov. 20 while EPCOT undergoes a multi-year transformation. Disney Cruise Line has announced new itineraries and its much-anticipated new ship Disney Wish that will begin cruises to the Bahamas next summer complete with the first AquaMouse water attraction, a revamped Oceaneer’s Club, new restaurants, including a Frozen dinner theater and more adults-only options, including a Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge with otherworldly concoctions.

EUROPE RIVER AND CANAL CRUISES

Gift the family a barge trip on a French canal with Croisieurope.

River and canal barge cruising continue to grow in popularity, letting more guests experience more European destinations aboard the comfort of a floating hotel. For families, the formula seems right: All included amenities, visiting many ports without the need to pack and unpack each day, and variety of tours for all interests mean a worry-free vacation for parents. Customize a barge trip for your group of up to 22 for the ultimate in social distancing. CroisiEurope welcomes families on board all cruises: Children under 2 travel free, under 10 at a reduced rate year-round. Cabins for singles, doubles, triples and quadruples mean every size family can be accommodated. Kids under 16 travel free in Spain, Portugal and Italy – and at 30% off fares in Croatia and Montenegro on summer departures. Vaccinated families should consider the special offers on their current departure schedule. Activities for families are built into the itinerary, so it’s the relaxing way to experience Europe. Here’s a review of a recent CroisiEurope Duoro River cruise in Portugal.

KANSAS, GEM OF I-70

With road trips all the rage this summer, many families are likely to drive part of their route along I-70, a central component of the US Interstate System founded by President Eisenhower’s Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. What many families don’t realize is just how much fun the stops along I-70 in Kansas can be. It’s more than 500 miles of 18-wheelers and corn fields. Kansas boasts classic small towns with huge artworks; talk about the summer of Van Gogh – have you seen Goodland, Kansas’ 80-foot-tall “Three Sunflowers in a Vase?” Other places worth a stop along I-70 include cinemas, arts festivals, military forts and local history museums to ease the road trip boredom for passengers of every age and interest. Read more about Kansas’s roadside attractions to plan just where your family will stay the night.

MEXICO AND CARIBBEAN RESORTS

The Seabourn Odyssey is moored offshore in the Caribbean. Photo c. Seabourn

Summer traditionally has been considered family season in Mexico and the Caribbean; wild sales and kids stay free packages at all-inclusives are the norm. However, each destination has different entry requirements and even vaccinated travelers may be required to show a negative COVID test result for entry. Order Let’s Get Checked home COVID-19 testing kits by mail, now approved for minors (aged 2 and over) for at-home Covid-19 testing, using this 30% off COVID testing link. Note that travelers from most international destinations will have to present a valid negative COVID-19 test to enter the US. We also recommend family travel insurance to anyone booking resorts during the June to November hurricane season. Jamaica offers options from staffed villas to all-inclusive resorts like Beaches, known for their commitment to children on the Autism Spectrum, to Half Moon Bay with the chance to swim with horses, and Golden Eye, where Ian Fleming famously wrote the Bond books and where you can take your pick staying in a beach “hut” or two-bedroom villa. Families interested in a cruise to more off the beaten path islands should plan ahead to November, when the luxury Seabourn line resumes award-winning 7- to 21-day cruises to the Caribbean, with 10% off for early bookers.

ORLANDO

Yup. The world’s theme park capital is open and welcoming families with new attractions as well as enhanced COVID-19 safety protocols. For those planning ahead, Walt Disney World will celebrate the resort’s 50th anniversary starting Oct. 1 and continuing for 18 months. (Follow #DisneyWorld50 on social media platforms.) Of course, a visit will be different this year, requiring masks and advance reservations. The kids won’t be able to hug their favorite characters. We’re Orlando fans because in addition to the theme parks, there’s so much else to do: great outlet mall shopping, several small art museums, lots of fun dining experiences and plenty new outside the parks too. Dr. Phillips Center’s Frontyard Festival is the first socially distanced music festival in the U.S., offering everything from music performances to comedy shows to big-name concerts, through May. The Museum of Illusions Orlando offers 50 interactive, immersive and mentally deceptive exhibits based on math, science, and psychology. Dezerland Park, an all-new indoor attraction on International Drive, boasts a trampoline park and the longest indoor dual go-karting tracks in Florida. There are also plenty of options for free things to do outdoors, from farmers markets to Sunday morning yoga in the 43-acre Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. Play outside at the 20-plus mile West Orange Trail (rent bikes from West Orange Trail Bikes & Blades Co., which offers delivery to area hotels) and the Nemours Family Zone at the US Tennis Association National Campus. (Play for free but you must pre-register!)

RIVER RAFTING AND AQUATIC ADVENTURES

Keep cool -- no need to carry on with your paddling when you're on an escorted river trip with OARS. Photo c. OARS

The legendary outfitter OARS has been sharing the world’s great rivers with guests since 1969, contributing more than $5 million in donations and fees toward the preservation of the environment and to various conservation initiatives since the company’s inception. After an abbreviated and challenging 2020 season, OARS is looking forward to fun, low-stress whitewater conditions for many of the family-friendly rafting trips they offer in the West. They're forecasting lower, but reliable water levels this summer for popular river trips like Utah’s Green River through Gates of Lodore and Desolation Canyon, which can count on water releases from upstream reservoirs. Five-day family trips (minimum age 7) for Green River Rafting through Desolation Canyon promise more than 50 Class II and III rapids. OARS experts say that in California, a mild winter and statewide snowpack that’s at 59% the normal average isn’t expected to heavily impact rafting on dam-controlled rivers like the American River and the Tuolumne River. The 3-day Lower Klamath Trip departing Happy Camp, California is ideal for young adventurers ages 4+. From June to mid-August, families are guaranteed warm and gentle Class II rapids, easy rafting, fishing and fully supported camping along the Klamath River. Due to the region’s rich Gold Rush history, discovering gold may be a highlight of the trip. For 2021, expect many of the same COVID-19 protocols that were put in place last summer to minimize the risk of transmission on the river. For more information on OARS’ eco-friendly adventures, visit www.oars.com or call 800/346-6277.

SKI COUNTRY SUMMERS

An off season ski resort condo should be a bargain whether you choose Steamboat Springs in Colorado for its weekly rodeos and free concerts or Lake Tahoe for yoga paddleboarding. In Park City, Utah, spend summer careening down an alpine coaster or facing the Olympic bobsled track. Hike and mountain bike through Montana’s Big Sky or Oregon’s Mt. Hood regions, among many other almost-four-season resorts. The good news is that lodging is a lot cheaper in summer at snow resorts  and more on-mountain activities are returning this summer, like the Lost Forest at the top of Snowmass’ Elk Gondola. You don’t need a pricey lift ticket to hike or bike – but they are great value for scenic sightseeing with less fit family members. It likely won’t be as hard to get into the top restaurants either. Here’s an account of celebrating a pre pandemic July 4th weekend in Vail.

SPLURGE BY PLANNING AHEAD WITH ATLAS

Watch Juvenile Southern Seals fight for dominance with a show of strength on your Antarctica expedition. Photo by Michel Verdure for Atlas Ocean Voyages.

For many American families, this summer will be about staying local and saving up for a really big bucket list vacation. With nearly 15 months to think about what could be the most amazing destination ever, Antarctica is topping many wish lists. While several expedition companies are touting their special sailings, none compares with the luxurious new offering from Atlas Ocean Voyages. Families set sail for Antarctica aboard World Navigator, Atlas’ Polar Category C- and Ice Class 1B-certified ship, after a private flight from Orlando to Ushuaia, Argentina. Fewer than 200 fellow explorers join naturalists and experts dedicated to helping you and kids ages 10+ get the most out of your refined adventure. You can even make or renew wedding vows at ‘the end of the world’ on the Valentine’s Day 2022 departure. Atlas’ wedding package is complimentary for guests when registered in advance plus, the bride enjoys a 50% stateroom savings when the wedding party books five or more rooms. As with all Atlas luxe-adventure expeditions, guests travel in the brand’s signature All Inclusive All The Way style, which, on Antarctica expeditions, includes all meals, beverages, activities, shore excursions and more. Their flexible travel policy also provides travelers a 100% refund of deposited funds up to 91 days prior to sailing. Plan now because you can change your reservation as often as you want, and even switch to a different Atlas itinerary, up to 15 days before your voyages’ sail date.

UTAH HIGH WITH MOAB ADVENTURES

The Moab Adventure Center will help you achieve new heights when adventuring in Arches, Canyonlands or the great outdoors around Moab, Utah. Photo c. Moab Adventure Center

Moab Adventure Center focuses on day tours and adventures, whether you want to river raft, take an off-road Hummer safari, hike with a guide in Arches National Park, horseback ride, have a unique mountain biking adventure or raft in Cataract Canyon. They’re family welcoming too, with Hummer safari tours available to ages 3+ and laidback rafting trips for ages 5+ and 50 lbs. Enjoy each of their adventures knowing safety protocols have been put in place to maintain a safe and fun environment. Moab is a very popular, eastern Utah mountain town that can get crowded, making Moab Adventure Center the easiest way to reserve any outdoor experience without worry or stress—and get out of your comfort zone trying something new!

WILMINGTON AND DELAWARE’S BIDEN COUNTRY

Start your tour of Biden Country in Newark at The Biden Welcome Center, a visitor’s center packed with maps and brochures about the state the 46th president has called home for years. Renamed for the entire Biden family and their service to Delaware prior to the election, it reminds us that even the Wilmington railroad station is named after the First Commuter who was nicknamed “Amtrak Joe.” Did you know that both the Bidens and reggae legend Bob Marley lived in Wilmington’s Eastlake neighborhood? From the estates of the du Pont family which have become fantastic museums of American arts and crafts to the casual, homey eateries that the President and his family still frequent, the first state is full of surprises every family will enjoy. And no, the St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church in Greenville was not named after the president.

Note that this summer, vaccinated Americans traveling within the US won’t need COVID-19 testing or post-travel self-quarantine as long as they continue to wear masks indoors, avoid crowds, social distance and wash hands frequently. Additionally, vaccinated travelers will likely be safely allowed to travel in many European countries. Travelers going to destinations that require a negative COVID-19 PCR test should take advantage of our partnership with Let’s Get Checked to get home COVID-19 testing kits by mail, now approved for minors (aged 2 and over.) Use our 30% discount COVID testing link and get results back in 72 hours or less.

Road Trip Spin: Head across Sweden and Denmark

We love to share good deals, so this one – a free, five-day car rental for Americans traveling to Scandinavia -- caught our eye.  From now through March 15, 2018, any party of two can book flights and add on a rental car, at no extra charge, for any trips taken from May 18 to August 16, 2018.

The Scandinavian Airlines Fly & Drive promotion is designed to encourage travelers to see as much as possible during the long summer days by exploring the region’s cities, coastal towns (these countries have extensive archipelagos and hundreds of islands), and pristine national parks.

Here are two favorite itineraries suggested for outdoor adventures and family fun – divide your time between the stops that sound most interesting, and limit the driving to an hour or two each day, for a great vacation.

Stockholm to Skåne in Sweden

Begin in the capital city and make your way toward SöderÃ¥sens National Park in SkÃ¥ne and hike toward Kopparhatten, often referred to as “SkÃ¥nes Grand Canyon.” Stops along the way include Dalsland for moose sightings, and Koster Island – Sweden’s first national marine park.

Next, head to Grebbestad and join an oyster safari or lobster catching trip (their suggestions, not mine, but fun!) before driving to Tjörn for some kayaking. Then, it’s a tour of Pilane – one of Europe’s most popular sculpture parks. Less than an hour away, you’ll arrive in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second city, before arriving in SkÃ¥ne.

Copenhagen to Fyn in Denmark

Start in beautiful Copenhagen and head to Denmark’s Fairytale island, where there are driving routes already charted to take into account your interests in beer, chocolate, horseback riding or castles.

The main city of Odense, Denmark's third-largest, is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, one of Denmark’s most beloved authors (two hours from Copenhagen.) Here’s a Family Travel Forum report on a weekend in Odense with kids.

The charming village of Odense is fun to explore on foot. Photo courtesy Visit Denmark.

Just 30 minutes south of Odense, drivers will find Egeskov Castle, a 460-year-old castle, with extraordinary gardens, a Classics Museum, and tons of family-friendly activities. Svendborg, a short 20-minute drive from Egeskov, is an idyllic harbor town. From here, there are hourly ferries to Ærø—a favorite vacation spot amongst the Danes. Here visitors will find brightly colored harbor houses, cobblestone streets, and charming cafes. A 45-minute drive southeast of Odense lies Falsled Kro, the only Relais & Chateaux hotel in Denmark, perfect for an overnight splurge.

Intrigued by a Scandinavian road trip?  To recap the details: When a roundtrip flight via Scandinavian Airlines is booked for two from the US to Oslo, Stockholm or Copenhagen, Scandinavian Airlines is offering a free, five-day Avis rental carto experience the destination. The Scandinavian Airlines Fly & Drive promotion must be booked by March 15, 2018 and used for travel this summer, between May 18 and August 16, 2018.

Let us know which itinerary appeals, or if you decide to head off in another direction.

5 Places to Ring In the New Year with Your Kids

If you’re a parent whose first New Year’s resolution is “spend more quality time with the kids,” there’s no need to wait until January 1st to act. Here are five favorite destinations that celebrate the arrival of the New Year with early and, often, alcohol-free public events designed for families.

First Night in Boston, Massachusetts

The city of Boston was the first to produce a fee-free, alcohol-free, civic-minded First Night focused on performing arts more than 40 years ago, a tradition that has spread to more than 200 cities around the world. For 2017, First Night First Day festivities will take place indoors and out around Boston Common and Copley Square. All day into the night, families can see concerts, dance performances, holiday lights and ice sculptors at work. Art gallery tours begin at noon. At 6:00 p.m. there’s the annual People’s Procession and, at 7:00 p.m., family fireworks at Boston Common. Revelers can stay on till midnight for the even bigger Countdown to Copley fireworks illuminating the sky over Copley Square, or watch it live on NBC Boston from their hotels. On January 1, family and children’s entertainment will be live in Copley Square from noon to 4:00 p.m.

Sunset on Clearwater Beach, Florida

Don't expect much bubbly to flow on the sugar sand beaches of family-focused Clearwater Beach. On New Year’s Eve, like most other nights, everyone strolls over to Pier 60 on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline to admire the sunset, listen to live music, shop for crafts and watch fire-throwers perform daring feats. The free, nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 Festival takes place from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., after which most families head over to Frenchy's Original. In the past 45 years, the Quebec, Canada expat known as “Frenchy” has opened five very popular seafood cafes. Kids love the beer-battered grouper, garlic fries sprinkled with crabmeat, and key lime pie; a special menu will be available New Year’s Eve. If everyone’s still awake, lay your blanket out on the beach to wait for Light It Up Clearwater, the annual fireworks show amplified in spectacular fashion by reflections from the calm Gulf waters.

Twice the Fireworks in Denver, Colorado

The Mile High City of Denver is situated above 5,000 feet in altitude, and its thin air is ideal to view fireworks. Fortunately, New Year's Eve Fireworks Downtown are done twice:  at 9:00 p.m. for families and at the traditional stroke of midnight for night owls. Get to the 16th Street Mall by 8:00 p.m. for a good viewing spot, and enjoy the costumed characters, stilt walkers and balloon-making artists while you wait. If you’re traveling with preschoolers, start the last day of 2016 at the Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for running-around fun like confetti showers, bouncing on bubble wrap, and art projects. The Denver Zoo Year’s Eve party welcomes families to view its extensive holiday lights and enjoy a 9:00 p.m. countdown party.

The Big Orange over Miami, Florida

Whether you’re fans of Justin Bieber or Billy Joel, Miami has you covered, with private New Year’s Eve concerts by both superstars plus dozens of world-class DJ parties at area nightclubs. Families should head to downtown Coconut Grove at 2:00 p.m. December 31 for the King Mango Strut Parade, a silly parade of costumed locals whose first float features the winner of the Little Miss Mango Pageant. Hit the beach, have some Cuban food, then be at Pitbull's New Year Revolution at Bayfront Park by 10:00 p.m. Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg are hosting the free outdoor countdown concert that will thrill teens. (Younger kids can get in their PJs and watch it live on Fox TV in your hotel.) Keep an eye out for the 35-foot-wide Big Orange being hoisted up the side of the InterContinental Hotel. As it reaches the roof at midnight, fireworks illuminate the city, the park and Biscayne Bay -- where hundreds of party boats are waiting to host the city’s famed after-parties.

MoonPie Drop in Mobile, Alabama

They’re expecting 50,000 people for the Mobile New Year, which begins at 3:00 p.m. with the live broadcast of the National College Football Championship play-off game on big screens off Bienville Square. Mobile is known more for MoonPies marshmallow sandwiches than football – it’s the favorite treat thrown out by Mardi Gras maskers in the very first city to celebrate Mardi Gras, back in 1703. During New Year’s Eve, a 12-foot-tall, 600 lb. electric MoonPie hovers over the square while spectators chow down on the world’s largest edible MoonPie baked by the original Chattanooga Bakery. While awaiting midnight, dance to the live music of En Vogue, parade around with painted umbrellas, and find a viewing spot for the laser light show, fireworks and of course, the MoonPie drop.

Visit our colleagues at Family Travel Forum for more ideas on where to spend New Year's Eve with the whole family.

Happy New Year's!

Avoid These Places if Your Kids Get Restless in Cars

I just heard that a friend told his family not to join him on an all-expenses-paid trip to Madrid, because he'd read that the traffic was bad... and knew his son hated to sit in a car seat.

An Infographic on global traffic congeston from the 2015 TomTom Traffic Index

Today's parents have too much information. As much as technology might liberate someone to try a risky adventure, it also limits them because they're so keen on avoiding hassles. Trust me, Madrid is worth a little traffic time... even a lot of traffic time. Thanks to TomTom, the source for technology services and GPS systems, here is some information that may prove useful to all travelers.

From their 2016 annual report detailing 295 cities in 38 countries on six continents with the most traffic congestion, we learn that in 2015, Mexico City had the worst traffic in the world.

Top 5 Worst Cities for Traffic (and Car Seat Tantrums)

Drivers in the Mexican capital of Mexico City can expect to spend, says TomTom, 59% extra travel time stuck in traffic any time of day, and up to 103% in the evening peak periods. Compared with cities where there is a free flow, or uncongested, situation, drivers and passengers in Mexico City will spend an estimated 219 hours of extra travel time in their vehicles over the course of 280 working days each year.

Next in the top 5 most-trafficked cities, measured by what percentage of extra travel time is needed:
2. Bangkok (57%)
3. Istanbul (50%)
4. Rio de Janeiro (47%)
5. Moscow (44%)

Traffic Congestion is Up, Globally

In its 5th year of publishing the Traffic Index, TomTom worked with 14 trillion data points accumulated over the past eight years. Interestingly, although traffic congestion is up by 13% globally since 2008, in 2015, North America’s traffic congestion rose by 17%, and Europe's by 2%. TomTom analysts say this may be attributed to Southern European countries such as Italy (-7%) and Spain (-13%) where there has been a marked drop in traffic congestion in the past eight years.

Ranking of the most congested cities globally in 2015 (Overall daily congestion level – extra travel time – population over 800,000):

6 Bucharest (43%)
7 Salvador (43%)
8 Recife (43%)
9 Chengdu (41%)
10 Los Angeles (41%)

Traffic Congestion in Europe

Ranking of the most congested cities in Europe in 2015 (Overall daily congestion level – extra travel time – population over 800,000). Please note that Madrid is not mentioned in this list!

1 Moscow (44%)
2 Bucharest (43%) 3 Saint Petersburg (40%)
4 Warsaw (38%)
5 Rome (38%)
6 London (38%)
7 Marseille (38%)
8 Manchester (37%)
9 Athens (36%)
10 Paris (36%)

Traffic Congestion in North America

Ranking of the most congested cities in North America in 2015 (Overall daily congestion level – extra travel time – population over 800,000):

1 Mexico City (59%)
2 Los Angeles (41%)
3 San Francisco (36%)
4 Vancouver (34%)
5 New York (33%)
6 Seattle (31%)
7 San Jose (30%)
8 Honolulu (29%)
9 Toronto (28%)
10 Miami (28%)

Don't Let Kids Get Stuck in a Car Seat!

Ralf-Peter Schaefer, VP TomTom Traffic, says: “We really want everybody to think about how they can lower the amount of time they waste in traffic every day – and to realize that we all need to play a part."

"If even just five per cent of us changed our travel plans," he adds, "we’d improve travel times on our major highways by up to thirty per cent (according to a recent study). Collectively, we can all work together to beat traffic congestion.”

Schaefer would like to see road authorities and local governments using TomTom’s traffic data to better manage traffic flow during the rush hour. Businesses can use it to plan smarter working hours to avoid rush hour, and drivers can use the real-time traffic information and smart routing to avoid congested roads.

Think your commute is worse than ever?

Will Colorado Prevail with Academy Members and Get an Oscar?

As you plan what outfit you'll wear to watch this year's Academy Awards ceremony, it's fun to think about traveling to the locations where the Oscar-nominated films were shot. Not everyone is interested in touring the freezing woods outside Calgary, Alberta, where The Revenant was filmed; or the bristling sand desert of Namibia where Mad Max: Fury Road was shot.

Samuel L. Jackson in "The Hateful Eight" shot outside Telluride

Enter The Hateful Eight, which was filmed in beautiful Colorado. The film directed by Quentin Tarantino is up for three awards in 2016:  Best Cinematography, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Original Score. If you haven't seen it, this colorful post-Civil War Western follows a bounty hunter's adventures with seven very special guests at an inn near the stunning southwestern town of Telluride.

Thanks to the Colorado Tourism office, we can share a list of other scenic locations used by award-winning films over the years.

Hateful Eight (Telluride). Although the movie was filmed in the wilderness area, the fourteeners surrounding the town and the San Miguel River are seen throughout the film. The cast and crew were also seen around town frequenting popular restaurants and bars, and even joined the locals in Telluride Elks Park for a ski burn as a ritual to bring snow.

Badlands (Southeast). You thought it was South Dakota, right? Wrong. This 1973 Terrence Malick film was filmed in several locations throughout Colorado including Rocky Ford, La Junta, Las Animas, Delhi and Otero County. In the movie, the rich man’s home was actually filmed in two Colorado locations: exteriors were shot at Bloom Mansion in Trinidad, a historic home built in 1882; interiors in Rosemont Museum in Pueblo, an 1893 mansion that was later converted to a museum with nearly all of the original decor and furnishings.

Visitors still ride the Durango & Silverton Railroad that Butch and Sundance once robbed.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Southwest). In 1969, William Goldman wrote the famous western based on Butch and Sundance, a film that shot throughout the American West. Of several scenes filmed in southwest Colorado, the train robbery scenes were filmed on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The bar scene was filmed at the New Sheridan Bar in Telluride and, when Butch and Sundance jump in the river off of Baker Bridge, they are jumping into the Animas River in Durango.

Catch and Release (Boulder). In 2006, actress Jennifer Garner walked along Pearl Street Mall, the most iconic pedestrian-only shopping and commercial street in Boulder, while her character Gray Wheeler learns of her late fiancé’s wrongdoings. The movie was also shot at several other locations throughout Boulder.

Dumb and Dumber (Breckenridge, Estes Park). While Dumb and Dumber is set in Aspen, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels (Lloyd and Harry) actually headed to the town of Breckenridge and to the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park to film the 1994 comedy.

Furious 7 (Colorado Springs). Remember that wild scene in Furious 7 (2015) that has the cast falling out of a plane in cars onto a mountain? That scene was filmed on Pikes Peak (or “America’s Mountain”) in Colorado Springs and along Monarch Pass.

How the West Was Won (Southwest). The circa 1962 western expansion film had an all-star cast including John Wayne, Gregory Peck, Carroll Baker and more. Several locations in Colorado were used: Silverton, Durango, Montrose and most notably, Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site in La Junta, built in 1833 as a trading post. Although the fort was burned down in 1849, it was reconstructed in 1976 and can be visited today.

Lone Ranger (Creede, Alamosa). In 2013, Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer and the rest of the Lone Ranger crew spent almost a month filming the remake of the western film in Creede and Alamosa. While filming in his role as Tonto, Depp signed autographs at the Town Hall and was seen shopping around town, particularly at the local store Rare Things.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Glenwood Springs). Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) are a husband and wife who find out they are both assassins for opposing sides. Remember the climbing chase scene? It was filmed in Colorado’s Glenwood Canyon, a 12.5-mile-long canyon along Interstate-70 with beautiful scenery including the roaring Colorado River, 1,300-foot canyon walls and a hike to Hanging Lake, a stunning waterfall and crystal clear blue lake just one mile up from the road.

Set in Illinois, "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" was shot partly in Breckenridge.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (Breckenridge). Nobody can forget the scene in the 1989 comedy when Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) takes the family to get the Griswold family Christmas tree near their Illinois home. The family was actually getting their tree in the Colorado mountain town of Breckenridge.

Silver City (Front Range). In 2004, the historic mountain town of Leadville hosted Daryl Hannah, Chris Cooper and Danny Huston on Main Street while they filmed this political satire/murder mystery. The film was set in Colorado and the crew also visited Argo Gold Mine in Idaho Springs, Cherokee Castle and Ranch in Sedalia and several locations throughout Denver.

True Grit (Southwest). In 1969, this western brought John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell to the stunning San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado to film several scenes in the movie. The courtroom scenes were filmed at the Ouray County Courthouse in Ouray while other scenes in the movie were shot in Montrose, Gunnison and Ridgeway. In Ridgeway, visitors can now eat at the True Grit Café, which was built in honor of the movie.

Motorhome Travel On the Rise Among Young British Families

According to research done by Salop Leisure, a UK motorhome rental and sales company, the demographics of travel by RV -- or caravanning as it's known in Britain -- are quickly changing. The past year has seen a four-fold increase over recent years of Millennials who inquire about renting a motorhome or stationery camper at a vacation destination.

Whether due to the recessionary economy or a change in lifestyle, there's also been an increase in UK staycations and close-to-home road trips by RV, including those by grandparents traveling the roads in these compact units, with grandchildren aboard.

Notes Mark Bebb, managing director of Salop Leisure, "We’ve clearly noticed that the average caravan user is younger than they were just a few years ago. At England's Caravan Club, a membership group for RV enthusiasts, there are reports of an increase in young families as members.

“Our traditional caravan buyers are still coming in to the showroom," adds Mr. Bebb, "but we’re often seeing them accompanied by their grandchildren [to research] a joint purchase for these family members, as they discover a shared interest in this kind of holiday.” They dub this trend "gramping."

His findings are echoed by dealerships around Great Britain, where young celebrities such as Jamie Oliver, Kate Moss and Rio Ferdinand have professed to love RVing and camping in the outdoors. The recent BBC 4 documentary entitled Caravans – A British Love Affair also brought attention to the pastime.

RV travel has long been common in Australia, where nearly 75% of motorhome users are currently aged 20 to 54. Its popularity is said to be part nostalgia and part economics, as families who want to tour the country can save on hotel rooms. Stuart Livingstone, CEO Caravan and Camping Industries Association of South Australia, says that, “Young adults and young families are really where the next 10-15 years of growth is in the industry.”

Although not necessarily true for American families, in the UK surveys, young families with dependent children were found to be significantly more interested in taking a camping or RV holiday -- 75% of parents surveyed were between 25 and 44.

Additionally, according to Salop Leisure, data from Google indicates that 28% of visitors to RV websites in the last 12 months were under 45, and 20% of those visiting sales sites were also under the age of 45.

And what about gramping?  Apparently, Marilyn Lindsay from Slough, UK regularly takes her grandchildren on RV holidays. She says: “I bought my caravan for my grandchildren as I felt that a caravan holiday was not only cheaper but gave the kids wonderful adventures.”

With Autumn Leaves, Come #FallTrips and Harvest Festivals

Now that our kids are safely ensconced in their school seats, it's time to plan fun weekends that will keep the joys of summer alive... at least till midterms. That's why we think September is the best time to go apple picking, enjoy the fresh air, scuff some knees on tree limbs, and bring home a few bushels. It's one of the easiest staycation #falltrips we know, and a favorite from our annual Fabulous Fall Getaways roundup.

Leaf peeping is the favorite among all #falltrips

You can hop on a hayride to search for just the right pumpkin in mid-October. It's easy to find a u-pick farm with our directory of orchards and pumpkin patches near you and make it an overnight adventure.
We love the tradition of free fall festivals around the country and, because they boost local tourism, they are growing in number and scope.  For example, everyone of any age can enjoy Oktoberfest, that German ritual that dates to the 1810 wedding of Bavarian King Ludwig whose five-day party was such a hit that it was repeated for years afterward. In Germany, a whole month showcases local beers with Oktoberfest family events and community dinners where kids are always welcome.

Some Favorite Family Friendly Festivals

Start celebrating the golden aspen trees of the Rockies at the Breckenridge, Colorado Oktoberfest in mid-September, where Paulaner and local Breckenridge Brewery ales are served late into the nights. (Local families like to drop in Friday and Sunday afternoon.)

The Rockies are perfect for autumn hiking among golden aspen trees.

Several towns with German heritage celebrate in the US, tops among them being Oktoberfest Zinzinnati (September 19-21) which draws 500,000 Samuel Adams fans to Cincinnati for the Running of the Weiners dachshund races.

For two weekends (September 20-21, October 4-5), the foothills of the Berkshires in Massachusetts and Litchfield County, Connecticut offer 50+ free, guided Housatonic Heritage tours that cover historic gardens and estates, canoeing on the Housatonic River, bike trails, behind the scenes at local farms and more.
From short to long and rough to posh, there's a festival for for everyone. Go to the Cranberry Festival September 26-28 on the island of Nantucket off the coast of Massachusetts.

The 33rd annual New Ulm Oktoberfest Minnesota, which takes place in several venues over the first two weekends in October, features both local brews and wines.

In early October, festival-happy Breckenridge has a day devoted to the pre-Halloween Family Fun Fest (think caramel apples and pumpkin carving) in the Riverwalk Center. Put the kids to bed and join the very popular Craft Spirits Festival (October 24-26) held in many of the town's historic pubs; more Breck Festival info here.

Tybee Island, a quirky beach town off the coast of Savannah, Georgia that's considered one of the best beaches for kids on the east coast, goes full Pirate October 9-12 with a costumed Pirate Victory Parade, Little Matey's Cove, Thieves Market, and kids' activities such as a petting zoo and Ferris wheel; under 12s welcome free.

Tybee Island's Pirate Festival has a really fun parade.

That same weekend, Oceanside, California marks the annual Harbor Days with arts'n'craft exhibits, live music, a sand castle competition, beauty pageant, Tiki Swim and more.
The 15th annual North American Wife Carrying Championship (October 11) pits couples against each other on a 278-yard obstacle filled track at Sunday River, Maine's Fall Festival.

The tranquil Mission San Luis Rey is the center of action on Dia de los Muertos celebrated October 26, 2014 in the Mexican tradition.

Lots of Germans in Texas will join residents at the 33rd annual Galveston Island Oktoberfest, which is three packed days of family events, rodeo and 4H activities, beer sampling, ooompah bands and high steppin'.

And before you know it, it will be time to shop for turkeys for Thanksgiving!

The Family Vacationist: Collaborative Consumption Road Trips

The Family Vacationist : familytravelforum.com newsletter
Greetings Fellow Travelers,
As we approach the big July 4th holiday reading surveys and reader polls about who will travel and where, we know one thing for sure. Our ride boards, started in 2003 by a user who asked, "Need someone to drive your car cross country?," have blossomed. Every time we moderate the newest posts we find families from Europe or Australia, retired school teachers from Africa, students in North America, families visiting relatives -- all are folks looking to drive someone else's car. It's the collaborative consumption road trip, and we love being a part of that trend. If you're not yet into AirB&B or ZipCar, maybe you'll appreciate our users' willingness to share their vehicles... Read more...
