Here's a World Cup Soccer Star's Take on Dubai!
We really like this video of Zakumi, the Official Mascot of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, who recently followed in the footsteps of Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Andre Agassi by playing on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab.
For those who don't know, the Burj Al Arab is the world's most luxurious (and most expensive!) hotel, and it towers above the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Our buddy Zakumi was in Dubai for an action-packed holiday for a few days of Rn'R prior to his demanding job at the kick-off of the 2010 FIFA World
Cup in South Africa.
He flew in with Emirates – an Official Partner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup – and was welcomed to the airline's home base by cabin crew representing each of the 32 nations taking part in the soccer spectacle. It's fun to watch them roll out the red carpet and whisk the silly yellow fuzzy guy off on a whistle-stop tour.
Zakumi got to see, ride and participate in the fun at all of Dubai's top spots, including Dubai Aquarium, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Creek, Wild Wadi, Ski Dubai and Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa.
Last but not least was his bird's-eye view of the emirate from the helipad of the world's most iconic hotel, Burj Al Arab.

Inspiring Antarctic Exhibit Opens in New York City
The American Museum of Natural History will open “Race to the End of the Earth” on Saturday, May 29th. This inspiring exhibit chronicles the heroic competition between British Royal Navy captain Robert Falcon Scott and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen as they raced their men across Antarctica to claim the last great geographical prize on earth: the South Pole.
The exhibit showcases a number of artifacts from both groups of explorers including original sleds, clothing, watches, and goggles. The many handwritten letters and journal entries from the explorers confirm both the pains and joys that so often accompany the human drive to discover.
In conjunction with the opening of “Race to the End of the Earth,” the American Museum of Natural History will also host New York City’s International Polar Festival. This kid-friendly fair will feature a number of interactive events and activities that focus on Antarctica. Events include a meet and greet with real Antarctic explorers as well as "Penguins and Polar Bears: The Tip of the Iceberg," an interactive live show that employs puppets, songs, and games to demonstrate life on the frozen continent.
Access to both “Race to the End of the Earth” and the NYC Polar Festival is included in the museum’s standard admittance. Admission to the Museum of Natural History is $16.00 for adults, $9.00 for children and $12.00 for students and seniors. For more information please call 212/769-5100 or visit www.amnh.org.

After their refreshments, they toured the whole "Wizarding World of Harry Potter" themepark, spending the day visiting Hogsmeade, as well as touring through Hogwarts castle, home to the environment’s marquee attraction, "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey." This is supposed to be an awesome ride!

THE CAYMAN ISLANDS HELPS KIDS GET ‘FRESH AIR’ THIS SUMMER
This summer, a group of New York City-based children will visit the Cayman Islands while a group of Caymanian kids will travel to New York though a partnership between The Fresh Air Fund, the Cayman Islands, and Cayman Airways. From July 22 – 28, 10 inner-city children ages 10-12 will stay with host families in Grand Cayman to experience some of the most distinctive and engaging activities the Caribbean has to offer. Additionally, this is first time in the four years of this partnership that a cultural exchange program has been implemented, offering children ‘fresh air’ both in the Cayman Islands and New York.
The Fresh Air Fund kids will enjoy a week in Cayman experiencing some of the destination’s most fun and interactive attractions including Sea School with SpongeBob Squarepants, Stingray City, Boatswain’s Beach, Pedro St. James ‘Castle’, and the QE II Botanic Park, where they will encounter the endangered Blue Iguana. As part of this special exchange program, five Caymanian kids will experience days filled with swimming, sports, arts & crafts, boating, hiking, music, fishing, dancing, and more at the Fresh Air Fund’s Camp Mariah in Fishkill, New York.
“We are very happy to continue this strong partnership by participating in an exchange program with an organization so beloved by New Yorkers,” said Acting Director of Tourism for the Cayman Islands Mr. Shomari Scott. “The Caymanian community is excited to welcome a new group of children this summer and we look forward to showing them the many wonderful activities and attractions on-island.”
The Fresh Air Fund is an independent, not-for-profit agency that has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. The Fresh Air Fund children headed down to Cayman were selected by the organization once again this year based on their achievements, their willingness to succeed, and their history with the organization.

For avid fans of skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports, heading to the slopes of Chile makes a cool retreat in the heat of the summer. Chile, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s top winter sports destinations, and where numerous professional ski and snowboard teams train during the northern hemisphere summer, is renowned for its superior level of its ski slopes in the majestic Andes and can be a skier or snowboarder’s paradise. Due to the diversity of the slopes as well as the quality of their snow, winter sports in Chile make for a spectacular vacation during our summer months. Ski season in Chile begins in June and ends in late September. In some ski centers located further south in Patagonia, the season extends through to October.
Some of Chile’s premier ski resorts and centers include the following:
Valle Nevado
Located just 37 miles east of Santiago, at Valle Nevado ski resort, winter sports enthusiasts can feel the power of the Andes Mountains. Valle Nevado is characterized by ample and user-friendly slopes, located about 9,800 feet above sea level, making it ideal for an exciting day of skiing and snowboarding. With 41 well groomed runs over 7000 acres of terrain, Valle Nevado is Chile’s and South America’s largest ski resort but without the big crowds and long lift lines. For those looking to pump up their adrenaline, Valle Nevado offers heli-skiing in places where ski lifts cannot access and skiers and snowboarders alike can enjoy the best and untouched snow. There is also a terrain park and plenty of off-piste runs in addition to the 23 miles of groomed runs. This world renowned resort has been stylishly renovated in 2010 and offers three hotels for all budgets, private apartments, seven restaurants, a full-service spa and fitness center, movie theater, library, bars and lounges, a pub with live music, combined with breathtaking views of the Andes. Two new lifts and five new runs have also been added. Valle Nevado will also sport South America’s first gondola, scheduled to be operational in 2011.
Portillo
Located in a narrow pass of the Andes and known to be the oldest, most beautiful and famous ski resort in Chile, Portillo can accommodate up to 400 guests. And with roughly 450 employees on staff, guests are guaranteed to be well taken care of. One of Portillo’s many unique characteristics is the famous Laguna del Inca, whose scenic beauty rivals that of the Patagonian fjords. Portillo’s wide variety of trails, 23 in total, offer something for everyone. For those looking for more of an adrenaline rush, Portillo also offers heli-skiing. From July 31 to August 8, Portillo will be celebrating Chile’s most world renowned wines during its Fourth Annual Chilean Wine Week. Guests will have the luxury of experiencing Chilean wines from the best vineyards at no extra cost.
Nevados de Chillán
Located in Chile’s Lakes and Volcanoes region, three volcanoes, Nuevo, Viejo, and Nevado make up the ski resort of Nevados de Chillán. In addition to the center’s 28 slopes where skiers and snowboarders can shred, Nevados de Chillán is home to the longest trail in South America, Las Tres Marias, a four mile long run. For alternative activities, this resort has a circuit for Nordic skiing, another for snowmobiling, a renovated snow park, and snow tubing. For those passionate about tree runs, Nevados de Chillan offers superior tree trails in the most scenic environment. Travelers can opt to stay at Hotel Nevados de Chillán Termas and Spa, located next to the ski resort. The hotels complex includes nine swimming pools of hot spring water, spa centers, Jacuzzi and baths with sulfur vapor, travelers staying here can relax their sore muscles after a full day on the slopes.
Ski Pucón
Situated 495 miles south of Santiago in the Lakes and Volcanoes region on the shores of Lake Villarrica, Pucón is known for its natural half pipes and canyons. Pucón is the site of a magnificent, active volcano that is continuously smoking. The center features 20 well groomed runs and breathtaking views of the five surrounding lakes, making this an unforgettable experience. Depending on the amount of snow fall, one can find quality snow in some of the higher parts into the month of October, making it possible to ski or snowboard later in the season. Visitors to Pucon can bask in the immensity of the region’s natural beauty by climbing the Villarrica Volcano, an active volcano, and visiting the three neighboring national parks and vast extensions of rainforest. The area’s thermal baths are the perfect complement to a full day on the slopes. Lodging options nearby include Hotel Antumalal where guests can enjoy the spa and restaurant after a day of outdoor fun.
Cerro Mirador
The southern most ski center in Chile is Cerro Mirador. Located 15 minutes from Punta Arenas in Patagonia, Cerro Mirador boasts an impressive view of the Magellan Straits and Tierra del Fuego. Small and cozy, Cerro Mirador offers 14 runs, some of them double black diamond for expert skiers looking for a challenge. Travelers can stay at Hotel Rey Don Felipe, a five star property offering 45 rooms and a restaurant.
Looking to relax after a long day of hitting the slopes? Many of Chile’s resorts boast spas, gyms and outdoor swimming pools where guests can enjoy different treatments, massages, swimming, and other recreational activities. In the area of each ski resort, guests can find restaurants, pubs, and clubs where skiers and boarders can wind down from the day’s exhilarating activities.

Carnival Cruise Lines Offers New Mexican Programming
Carnival Cruise Lines will introduce a new one-of-a-kind schedule from San Diego encompassing five- and nine-day Mexican Riviera voyages aboard the 2,124-passenger Carnival Spirit beginning Dec. 10, 2010.
On this unique program, five-day cruises will visit the popular resort town of Cabo San Lucas for two full days, while nine-day cruises will also feature a two-day call in Cabo San Lucas in addition to visits to the stunning seaside destinations of Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and La Paz, the first time this port has been featured as a regular stop on a Carnival itinerary.
“Carnival Spirit’s convenient new schedule from San Diego provides consumers with two distinctly different West Coast cruise choices – a value-packed five-day cruise and a port-intensive nine-day itinerary, both calling at world-class resort destinations along the Mexican Riviera,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO.
The two-day visits to Cabo San Lucas were selected based on guest feedback requesting more time to enjoy this popular destination which is highlighted by its distinctive rock formations, lush landscape and aqua-blue waters teeming with tropical fish.
Nine-day cruises depart Friday and return Sunday so guests can enjoy a longer cruise with more time in the spectacular ports of call, all within a typical weekend-to-weekend vacation period. Five-day cruises depart Sunday and return Friday, offering the ideal short cruise vacation at an attractive price.
Nine-day cruises will also call at Puerto Vallarta, a charming city where guests can relax on gorgeous white-sand beaches or stroll along the famed Malecon, a seaside walkway lined with restaurants, art galleries, and shops. Also featured is Mazatlan, known as the Pearl of the Pacific for its beautiful beaches, abundant marine life, and myriad fishing and diving opportunities. Rounding out the itinerary is La Paz, a sun worshippers’ paradise famous for its excellent sportfishing, snorkeling and scuba diving, with white-sand beaches stretching the length of its magnificent waterfront.
The namesake vessel in the line’s Spirit-class, Carnival Spirit offers a variety of on-board facilities and features – an indoor wrap around promenade, an classic American-style steakhouse located at the top level of a soaring-nine-deck high atrium, extensive spa and children’s facilities, and a two-level promenade lined with themed lounges, bars and nightspots. Four swimming pools, as well as Carnival’s signature Twister Waterslide, are featured, as well.
Carnival Spirit also offers bow-to-stern Wi-Fi, full casino gambling, myriad entertainment choices, including lavish production shows, along with a wedding chapel and conference center. In addition to the steakhouse, dining options include a two-level formal restaurant and an expansive poolside eatery with a 24-hour pizzeria, New York-style deli, an Asian specialty venue and other casual choices.
Of the ship’s 1,062 staterooms, 80 percent offer either an ocean view or balcony – ideal for viewing the beautiful scenery. All staterooms feature the Carnival Comfort Bed with plush mattresses, luxurious duvets and high quality linens and pillows.
Carnival Spirit will operate its new five- and nine-day Mexican Riviera schedule through April 1, 2011. The Carnival Spirit will then offer its previously scheduled 12-day Hawaii cruises (April 10 and 22, 2011) and a full season of seven-day Alaska cruises departing from Seattle (beginning May 10, 2011).
The new five- and nine-day cruises replace the Carnival Spirit’s previous eight-day Mexican Riviera program. Guests scheduled to sail on the eight-day voyages have the following options: switch to a new nine-day Mexican Riviera cruise with their eight-day cruise fare protected; re-book an alternate Carnival sailing and receive a $50 per person on-board credit; or cancel and receive a full refund. Travel agent commissions will be protected.
Carnival is currently accepting reservations on the Carnival Spirit’s new five- and nine-day Mexican Riviera cruises.
For additional information and reservations, contact any travel agent, call 1-800-CARNIVAL or visit carnival.com.
